Edgars Rinkevics, the European Union's first openly gay head of state, has been inaugurated as the president of Latvia, marking a historic moment in the political landscape of the region.
Rinkevics, who served as Latvia's foreign minister since 2011, took the oath of office on Saturday, following his successful election in May. His ascension to the presidency is a landmark event in a continent where issues of LGBTQ+ rights and representation continue to resonate.
Coming out publicly in 2014, Rinkevics took to Twitter to declare, "I proudly announce I am gay… Good luck all of you." His admission was a bold move at the time, and he pledged to advocate for equal relationship rights for the gay community. Same-sex marriage is yet to be recognized legally in Latvia, although civil partnerships have been accessible to same-sex couples since the previous year.
The presidential role in Latvia primarily serves as a ceremonial position, with the head of state acting as a unifying figure and opinion leader within the country. Key responsibilities encompass international representation of Latvia, acting as the supreme commander of the armed forces, endorsing bills into law, and nominating the Prime Minister.
While openly gay individuals have been elected as heads of government in the EU before, such as Leo Varadkar in Ireland, Rinkevics is the first to serve as a head of state, making his inauguration a milestone moment in EU history.
During his inauguration speech, Rinkevics made a commitment "to stand up for a modern and strong Latvia, for a legal and just Latvia, for the wellbeing of the people, for an inclusive and respectful society." He emphasized that "The rights of every person must be respected and protected in accordance with the highest human rights values and standards."
In addition, he pledged to continue Latvia's support for the "heroic Ukrainian people," expressing that the nation's foreign policy "does not have time for mistakes".
At 49, Rinkevics is the seventh president of Latvia, a country with 1.8 million inhabitants, which has been a member of both the EU and NATO since it reacquired its independence in 1991.
