Victoria Police is investigating a man who allegedly made a Nazi salute on the steps of the county court in Melbourne, Australia, just a week after the gesture was made illegal in the state.

The incident occurred during an interview with neo-Nazi group leaders Thomas Sewell and Jacob Hersant, who were convicted of violent affray. In the footage, Sewell is heard saying "heil Hitler," and Hersant raises his arm in an alleged Nazi salute before stopping and mentioning that it's illegal now.

This incident marks the first reported case to police since the ban on the Nazi salute in Victoria went into effect. Under the new law, anyone displaying or performing a Nazi symbol or gesture in public faces penalties of up to $23,000, 12 months' jail, or both.
