Heavy Rain Warning Issued for Scotland as Prolonged Dry Spell Comes to an End

The Met Office has issued a heavy rain warning for large parts of Scotland due to a prolonged dry spell.

18 June 2023 · 22:54 UTC

A band of wet weather is expected to move northwards across the southern half of the country on Sunday evening, with 40-60mm of rain possible in places and some locations seeing 80mm or more.

Localised flooding may occur, and the rain will move into the central belt and further north on Monday.

The dry ground could heighten the risk of flooding, and surface spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures.

A first warning is in place until midnight, covering an area that extends as far north as Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the Kintyre peninsula, and a second warning is in place until midday on Monday for north-east Scotland and parts of the Western Isles.

The longer-term forecast is for temperatures to remain above average for the time of year with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms but plenty of sunshine in between.
