Gérard Depardieu's Allegations Lead to Friction for Macron

The controversy surrounding Gérard Depardieu over sexual violence claims has reignited debates in France. President Emmanuel Macron has distanced himself from considering revoking the actor's Légion d'honneur amid these allegations.

Despite Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malek's condemnation of Depardieu for disgraceful behavior, Macron is cautious, fearing the possibility of "media justice" overshadowing official judicial processes. He insists that political leaders should not propel such trends, surprised by the unannounced proposal to reassess the actor's highest French honor.

Macron consistently emphasizes the importance of an effective judicial system over media-driven judgments, previously demonstrated during accusations against Nicolas Hulot.

Depardieu, in a recent documentary, faces scrutiny for past offensive remarks and is being investigated for the alleged rape of Charlotte Arnould in 2018, claims which he denies. With over a dozen women accusing him of various instances of misconduct from 2004 to 2022, Depardieu's family calls the allegations a dishonest conspiracy against him.
