The group, which included members of Extinction Rebellion, aimed to block a main highway into the city to protest against subsidies and tax breaks for fossil fuel industries.

However, a heavy police presence prevented them from reaching the road.

Thunberg was seen giving a victory sign as she was taken away in a police bus after being detained for partially blocking a different road.

Extinction Rebellion protestors in the Netherlands have blocked the highway near the Dutch parliament building over 30 times to protest subsidies for fossil fuels.

Greta Thunberg, a 21-year-old climate activist, has been a leading figure in this movement, inspiring a global youth movement demanding stronger climate change action.

Thunberg was acquitted in London for refusing to leave a protest at an oil and gas industry conference.

She has faced fines in both Sweden and the UK for civil disobedience during protests.

Activists waved flags and chanted "We are unstoppable, another world is possible," while one held a banner reading "This is a dead end street."
