Granting justice powers would be calamitous, warns Buckland

Former Justice Secretary Sir Robert Buckland warns that transferring justice powers to Wales would be disastrous.

Buckland, an experienced barrister from Llanelli, believes maintaining the joint legal system with England is beneficial and opposes the recommendation for Wales to manage its own justice system.

The suggestion, from a commission tasked with evaluating Welsh devolution, also includes shifting control of railways and policing to the Welsh government.

Despite the commission outlining possible devolution scenarios, including enhanced powers, federal arrangements, or full independence, Buckland strongly rejects the notion of Welsh independence, predicting economic struggles and stagnation.

The commission leaves the decision to politicians, and while the Welsh government, led by Mark Drakeford, is examining the report, Plaid Cymru views it as an affirmation of independence as a viable option.

Jane Dodds of the Welsh Liberal Democrats appreciates the report's exploration of practical reforms for Wales' relationship with the UK.
