Government Tightens Overseas Political Donation Rules to Strengthen Safeguards Against Foreign Influence
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has introduced new rules requiring political candidates to declare donations above £2,230 received before standing for office. Under the updated framework, individuals moving to the United Kingdom from overseas must live in the country for at least one year before making political donations of £100,000 or more. Corporate donations will now be assessed against post-tax profits rather than revenue, in an effort to strengthen transparency and reduce the risk of foreign interference in political funding.
