Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has accused News UK, the publisher of The Sun and News of the World, of covering up phone hacking evidence.

He believes the company deleted emails to prevent police from viewing them.

Brown also suspects his phone was hacked while he was in office and is considering legal action.

News UK denies these allegations, which were first made public in civil court documents.

In 2015, prosecutors concluded there was no evidence of corporate wrongdoing, but Brown believes the investigation was based on an incomplete picture of the case.

A spokesperson revealed new evidence about the extent of phone hacking and interference in civil liberties by a news organization, which was not known to the police at the time.

The victims included families dealing with grief, tragedies, accidents, and murders, such as the murdered teenager Milly Dowler and those affected by the 7 July 2005 London terror attacks.

The police investigation into the company was halted in 2015 after the convictions of senior journalists, including a former editor of the News of the World.

In 2011, the company closed down the tabloid News of the World after admitting that journalists working there had engaged in wrongdoing, primarily phone hacking.

The company has paid damages to over 800 victims of phone hacking and has settled cases brought against it by those targeted by the Sun tabloid, without admitting liability.
