Google Wins Trademark Dispute Over YouTube Shorts

Court Dismisses Claims of Trademark Confusion by British Film Company

01 November 2024 · 16:38 UTC

On Thursday, London's High Court ruled in favor of Google in a trademark lawsuit filed by Shorts International, a British short film company, over the use of the word 'shorts' in YouTube's short video platform, Shorts.

Shorts International, which operates a television channel focused on short films, claimed that Google infringed on its trademark.

YouTube, owned by Google, introduced Shorts featuring minute-long videos in 2020 as a competitor to TikTok.

Google's defense, presented by lawyer Lindsay Lane, emphasized that it was clearly known that Shorts was a YouTube venture.

Judge Michael Tappin concluded there was no risk of consumer confusion, and that Google’s use of 'shorts' didn’t damage Shorts International's trademark, leading to the dismissal of the case.

Neither Google nor Shorts International have issued a comment following the ruling.
