Google has reached an agreement to enforce new measures aimed at reducing fake reviews, following an investigation by the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).

The CMA initiated this investigation amid concerns that Google might have been violating consumer laws by inadequately safeguarding against fraudulent reviews.

Under the agreement, Google commits to implementing several strategies to tackle the issue.

These include enhancing the detection and removal of fake reviews, enforcing bans on individuals—regardless of their location—found to be repeatedly posting false reviews, and issuing alerts on the profiles of businesses displaying suspicious review patterns.

Additionally, Google will introduce more accessible reporting tools to help consumers signal potential concerns about reviews.

Google will report its compliance with these commitments to the CMA over a three-year period.

This collaboration marks a significant step for the company, one of the most prominent review platforms globally, particularly as its search results often display business ratings.

Sarah Cardell, chief executive of the CMA, stated that Google is 'leading the way' in combating fake reviews and emphasized the importance of fairness—both for consumers seeking reliable feedback and businesses that uphold honest practices.

'The changes we've secured from Google ensure robust processes are in place, so people can have confidence in reviews and make the best possible choices,' Cardell remarked.

A representative from Google highlighted the company's ongoing dedication to preventing fraudulent content.

'Our longstanding investments to combat fraudulent content help us block millions of fake reviews yearly—often before they ever get published,' the Google spokesperson stated.

The spokesperson reiterated the importance of Google’s cooperative efforts with regulators worldwide, including the UK’s CMA, as part of its continued commitment to mitigating fake content.
