The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has mandated that Israel halt any actions that could lead to genocide in Gaza and ensure the area receives humanitarian aid.
The conflict was triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, leading to approximately 1,140 Israeli deaths, mainly civilians. Additionally, about 250 individuals were taken hostage, with Israel claiming 132 remain in Gaza, including the remains of at least 28 hostages.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled accusations of genocide against Israel as "false" and "outrageous," calling for their universal rejection.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki welcomed the ICJ's directive, emphasizing that all nations are subject to the law and urging that the decision serves as a wake-up call for Israel.
South Africa's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which initiated the case at the ICJ, described the ruling as a triumph for justice and a pivotal moment in the quest for justice for Palestinians.
Hamas interpreted the ICJ's decision as a step towards isolating Israel and acknowledging its actions in Gaza.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez affirmed Spain's commitment to peace, the release of hostages, humanitarian aid accessibility, and the formation of a Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed hope that Israel's offensive against vulnerable populations would cease, highlighting the court's decision as significant.
The European Union stressed that the ICJ’s orders are obligatory and expected their full and prompt execution.
Human Rights Watch’s Balkees Jarrah underscored the court's decision as a critical warning to Israel and its allies to prevent genocide and further offenses against Palestinians in Gaza.
