The High Court in London has ruled that Gerry Adams, former leader of Sinn Féin, may be personally sued by IRA bombing victims seeking £1 in symbolic damages.

Three claimants, including Old Bailey bombing survivor John Clark, Jonathan Ganesh from the London Docklands bombing, and Barry Laycock, affected by the Manchester Arndale bombing, have initiated the lawsuit.

The court dismissed their claim against the IRA itself due to its lack of legal status as an entity.

Adams, who has repeatedly denied IRA membership, also failed to have the victims cover his legal expenses, already surpassing £120,000. The claimants, funding their legal battle through crowdfunding, interpret this as an intimidation tactic.

The plaintiffs accuse Adams of involvement in the British mainland bombings in 1973 and 1996. A previous request by Adams to have the case dismissed was denied, with the judge stating that his IRA membership at the time of the bombings requires full trial determination.

The ruling is seen as a major win for victims of IRA terrorism, according to their solicitor, Matthew Jury. It potentially represents the last opportunity to hold Adams accountable, amidst new government legislation on Troubles-related cases.

Adams' lawyer, Seamus Collins, noted the significance of the judgment excluding the IRA and Adams' representative capacity from the suit, with a further hearing on costs scheduled for the following week. Adams intends to consult his legal team on the developments.
