Germany's National Election Results Reveal East-West Divide

Far-right Alternative for Germany party gains significant ground as conservative bloc leads despite setbacks.
Preliminary results from Germany's recent national election highlight a pronounced disparity between the eastern and western regions of the country.

The data indicates that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has significantly solidified its presence, particularly in eastern states like Thuringia, where it secured a substantial share of the vote.

The conservative alliance, comprising the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), is projected to emerge as the leading force in the 630-seat Bundestag, with an anticipated 208 seats, despite capturing 28.5 percent of the national vote—below the 30 percent threshold that party leaders had hoped to achieve.

In contrast, the AfD garnered 20.8 percent of the vote, marking its most successful electoral performance to date and nearly doubling its support since the last election in 2021. This result underscores a broader trend of increasing far-right sentiment in the country, as analysts note it represents the strongest showing for any far-right party in Germany in recent years.

Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU/CSU, is poised to become the next Chancellor and has expressed a commitment to forming a coalition government, starting discussions with the center-left Social Democrats (SPD), led by outgoing Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Merz emphasized the urgency of addressing the challenges posed by the rising popularity of the AfD, stating, “We have to work together to solve the problems in Germany that are gradually removing the breeding ground for this party.”

The SPD suffered a significant defeat, recording its lowest vote share in decades, attributed in part to the collapse of Scholz's three-party coalition government in November, after years of internal conflict.

Although the Green Party and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) experienced mixed results, the political landscape in Germany has shifted notably.

The election results stem from preliminary counts across 299 constituencies, with efforts to dive deeper into the implications of this electoral outcome ongoing.
