French President Emmanuel Macron, grappling with the upheaval, postponed a scheduled state visit to Germany as the turmoil intensifies.
In an interview with ARD television in Germany, Chancellor Scholz expressed his belief in President Macron’s capability to restore calm. “I don’t expect that France will become unstable, even if the images, of course, are very distressing,” Scholz remarked.
A Test for Macron’s Leadership
The unrest has been a litmus test for President Macron's leadership, unveiling deep-rooted grievances in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods surrounding discrimination and limited opportunities.
The turbulence continued into its fifth night, although the intensity of the violence appeared to wane slightly.
The demonstrations have seen clashes between young protestors and police, and an unsettling episode where a burning car was launched into a mayor's residence, injuring family members inside.
Nationwide Response and Heightened Security Measures
Police reported 719 arrests across France after deploying increased security forces. The teenager, whose death has been a catalyst for the agitation, has been identified only as Nahel. His funeral took place in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris, where emotions remain heightened.
As night descended on Saturday, a congregation amassed on the Champs-Elysees to rally against his death and police violence. The crowd was met with a heavy police presence equipped with batons and shields.
Elsewhere in Paris, protestors ignited firecrackers and barricades, as police retaliated with tear gas and stun grenades.
An alarming incident occurred when a burning car collided with the residence of Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun in the Paris suburb of l’Hay-les-Roses. The mayor's wife and one of their children were injured in the attack which took place in the early hours. Mayor Jeanbrun, who is affiliated with the conservative opposition Republicans party, described the incident as a horrifying escalation in the unrest and called for the imposition of a state of emergency.
Investigations and Government Response
An investigation into attempted murder has been initiated by regional prosecutor Stephane Hardouin, who mentioned that preliminary findings indicate that the car was deliberately used to ram the house and cause a fire.
In response to the escalating situation, Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, along with Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and other officials, visited l’Hay-les-Roses to meet Mayor Jeanbrun. The Prime Minister vowed to restore order promptly.
President Macron convened a special security meeting with Prime Minister Borne, Interior Minister Darmanin, and the justice minister to address the situation.
Clashes also took place in the Mediterranean city of Marseille, albeit less severe than the previous night. Nationwide arrests have decreased, which Interior Minister Darmanin attributed to the assertive action by security forces.
While the large-scale police deployment has been welcomed by anxious residents and shop owners, it has exacerbated the frustrations of those who perceive police conduct as the root cause of the crisis.
