His affinity for Hull began during a business trip in 1991 when he experienced staying in a British hotel and fell in love with the traditional English breakfast.
Although he prefers to replace British sausages with extra bacon, he has remained enamored with Hull's unique attractions like the white phone boxes, the world's smallest window, and most importantly, the warmth and friendliness of its residents.
Rainer felt an instant connection with Hull's northern charm, highlighting how the people made him feel like family in just a short span of time. Even after his professional ties to Hull ended, Rainer continued his annual trips to the city, with exceptions in 2006 and a few years during the pandemic.
He has explored various attractions, such as Hull Fair, Trinity House, and the Guildhall, and plans to experience comedy nights or theatre visits in the future.
Chris Lawson, the owner of the Earlsmere Guesthouse where Rainer first stayed, has remained his close friend over the years. Chris organized a surprise for Rainer during his recent visit, setting up a special meeting with the Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Kalvin Neal.
In recognition of Rainer's consistent patronage, the Lord Mayor humorously commented on Rainer's contribution to the local economy and presented him with a letter of thanks for his annual visits.
