Officials raided 20 properties linked to the group, accusing them of attempts to disrupt government communications. They were reportedly flooding public authorities with calls and emails, seeking to undermine their operations.
The crackdown involved searches across eight regions, stemming from investigations that started in 2021, when authorities discovered Telegram channels spreading Reichsbürger ideologies and calls for action against the state.
The movement's apparent goal is to destabilize the German government, disrupting the workings of official bodies. Some public officials faced harassment, including death threats.
A 58-year-old man who allegedly ran one of the pivotal Telegram channels was arrested in 2021 and later charged with forming a criminal organization and promoting hate.
The Reichsbürger movement, with roots in the 1980s, surged during Covid-19, with about 20,000 members in Germany. It comprises individuals with anti-establishment views and those nostalgic for historical German regimes.
The group's ideals range from restoring the pre-WWI Second Reich to rejecting modern governmental structures, taxes, and legal identification. Last year, authorities disbanded an armed faction intent on toppling democratic institutions, which included notable figures such as a prince and a former parliamentarian.
