On Wednesday, the UK’s FTSE 100 index exhibited minimal movement in a mixed trading session for European and US stock markets, as investors anticipated significant monetary policy decisions from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England.

The FTSE 100 closed at 8,706.66, gaining 1.43 points or 0.02%, despite a late-afternoon dip.

Market analysts widely expect that interest rates in both the UK and the US will remain steady.

Policymakers are exercising caution due to a volatile economic landscape and increasing uncertainties surrounding global trade relations.

Sentiment in the US market was initially more positive, with the S&P 500 increasing by 0.8% and the Dow Jones up approximately 0.7% by the close of European markets.

In Paris, the Cac 40 index saw a rise of 0.7%, while Germany’s DAX index experienced a decline of 0.4%.

The UK pound slid 0.2% against the US dollar, settling at 1.297, but gained approximately 0.3% against the euro, reaching 1.192.

In corporate news, the FTSE 100's lowest performer was Compass Group, whose shares fell nearly 5% following a downgrade from broker BNP Paribas Exane, which adjusted its rating from 'outperform' to 'underperform'.

The company’s stock closed down by 4.8%.

Conversely, investment manager M&G announced plans to increase its dividend payouts annually, citing confidence in its future outlook.

The firm stated it had achieved cost savings of £188 million since early 2023, although it reported net outflows of £1.9 billion for the year.

Shares in M&G ended the day 2% higher.

The top performers on the FTSE 100 included Games Workshop, which rose by £3.90 to reach £146.30, followed by Informa up 16.4p to 786p, JD Sports up 1.58p to 79.52p, Melrose Industries up 10.6p to 540.6p, and M&G up 4.4p to 225.6p.

In terms of declines, the biggest fallers on the index were Compass Group, down 125p to 2,500p; Croda, down 81p to 3,017p; Diageo, down 44.5p to 2,035.5p; GSK, down 26.5p to 1,505p; and Schroders, down 6.2p to 380.4p.
