His grandmother has appealed for the violence to stop, urging rioters to "not use his death as an excuse for violence." The family has also called for a review of the law that allows police to use lethal force at traffic stops.

On Saturday night, 719 people were arrested amid demonstrations and riots, including the ram-raiding and arson of a Paris suburb mayor's home while his family was asleep.

The violence has also included attacks on schools, police stations, and stores.

French President Emmanuel Macron is due to hold a meeting with the prime minister and interior and justice ministers to address the ongoing unrest.
