Despite joint efforts, including a bilateral intelligence unit established in 2020, the UK's intelligence contribution has been labeled "very patchy," leading to imbalances in the Franco-British partnership.

The UK Home Office argues that the report doesn't reflect the current state of cooperation, claiming significant strides in preventing crossings and dismantling smuggling operations.

Efforts to resolve the life-threatening issue of Channel crossings have seen bilateral financial commitments for enhanced security and prevention. Nonetheless, the number of crossings prevented by French authorities increased significantly, while British officials forecasted a rise in arrivals post-bad weather.

Incidents, including the loss of 27 lives in a 2021 disaster, underscored systemic challenges in cross-Channel rescue operations. A new French immigration law faces scrutiny for potential constitutional conflicts, as France leads EU deportations but struggles to enforce removal orders and seeks to bolster voluntary return schemes.
