PARIS, FRANCE: Alain Delon, the legendary French film actor, died at the age of 88, his children announced Sunday.

He was known for iconic roles in 'Purple Noon' and 'Le Samourai,' and had been battling cancer.

Delon's son, Anthony, confirmed that he passed away peacefully at home in Douchy, surrounded by his family.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Delon a 'French monument,' and fellow star Brigitte Bardot said he left 'a huge void.' Despite millions of admirers, Delon faced criticism for his controversial views and tumultuous personal life.

He received an honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019.

Outside his home, fans gathered to pay their respects, commemorating a man who left an indelible mark on cinema.
