Frank Hester: Rishi Sunak say he won't return money from donor accused of racism

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been urged to return donations from Frank Hester, a donor embroiled in a racism row, after Hester allegedly stated that MP Diane Abbott "should be shot".

Though the PM condemned the remarks as "racist" and "wrong", he accepted Hester's apology and refused to give back the contributions, including the use of a helicopter valued at £15,000.

During a parliamentary session, Sunak defended keeping the donation, highlighting his leadership of a diverse government. Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer and SNP's Westminster leader Stephen Flynn both pressured Sunak to return the funds, with Flynn labeling Hester's views as dangerous extremism.

Abbott, currently sitting as an independent after her suspension from Labour in April 2023 for a controversial letter, has since apologized and sought to be readmitted to the party. Her case brought to light the broader issue of racism and the safety of MPs, particularly women of color, in politics.

Hester has publicly acknowledged that he spoke inappropriately about Abbott but denied any racist or sexist intent. The Conservative Party at large is facing calls to scrutinize and potentially return Hester's donations, while the Liberal Democrats have urged MPs to reject his "tainted" money.

The controversy was sparked by a Guardian report, which the BBC has not independently verified.
