France Issues Arrest Warrant for Syrian President Assad

On November 15 in Paris, French authorities issued arrest warrants for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher, and two high-ranking officials for their involvement in using chemical weapons against civilians, specifically during the 2013 attacks in Douma and Eastern Ghouta which resulted in over 1,000 deaths. These unprecedented international warrants accuse them of crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The UN and other investigations have previously implicated the Assad regime in chemical attacks, including the use of sarin gas, despite Syria's denial. Syrian government spokespeople have yet to comment on these warrants.

Mazen Darwish, a lawyer involved in initiating the case in France, emphasized the gravity of the accusations linked to sarin gas, suggesting direct presidential approval would have been required for such attacks. The warrants signify notable exceptions to the typical immunity of a sitting head of state.

This action follows other recent French warrants issued to former Syrian defense ministers for a bombing in 2017 that killed a French-Syrian dual national, and marks the continuation of French judicial efforts to address crimes by Syrian officials since the onset of the civil war in 2011.
