Former Post Office Operator Alleges Ethnic Bias: Claims British Asians Were Unfairly Targeted for Theft

Kuldeep Kaur Atwal, a former post office operator, was acquitted of allegations of stealing £30,000 after auditors implied that being a British Asian woman might have inclined her to such acts.

Despite the jury's not guilty verdict due to insufficient evidence, the Post Office demanded repayment, forcing Atwal to sell her branch at a loss.

The accusations leveled against Atwal emerged during an audit in the mid-90s. Following her clearance in court, internal Post Office documents revealed awareness of significant issues with their accounting software prior to the notorious Horizon system, which led to the wrongful conviction of hundreds.

Atwal, herself a victim of the flawed system known as Capture, recounted an auditor's suggestion that her cultural background might pressure her into theft – a remark she found both absurd and offensive.

Labour MP Kevan Jones has criticized the Post Office for hiding the faults of the Capture system, similar to those of Horizon, which the company admitted to last year, prompting an ongoing investigation.

At age 73, Atwal reflects on the ordeal that damaged her family's reputation and resulted in a pressured sale of her business. Her case is one of many that highlight the systemic problems which existed before the implementation of the Horizon software.
