Hired in 2019, Ding reportedly uploaded numerous sensitive files related to Google's data center technologies to his personal cloud storage. The stolen secrets included intricate details on the design and operation of advanced processing units and computing systems crucial for machine learning and AI.
While the theft was underway, a Chinese tech firm offered Ding a lucrative CTO role. Despite his "junior employee" status per Google, Ding engaged in capital-raising efforts for his new employer and another startup he led, all without Google's knowledge. His activities came to light following an investigation involving surveillance footage.
Authorities seized over 500 stolen files from Ding's devices and personal accounts during a search in January. Google has credited the FBI with helping protect their assets and vows continued cooperation.
At a legal conference in San Francisco, Attorney General Merrick Garland highlighted the severe implications of the charges Ding now faces—up to a decade in prison per count if convicted.
