The French maritime authority reported that this marked the first migrant deaths in the Channel in 2024, with over 30 individuals rescued.

The tragedy occurred near Wimereux, with the group's boat capsizing due to rough seas and high tides. Authorities suggested the victims were likely young Syrian men.

A French tow vessel discovered motionless victims in the water, with water temperatures around nine degrees Celsius. Survivors, including entire families with children, were brought to a Calais shelter. Some continued on to Armentieres.

An investigation into "aggravated manslaughter" among other charges has begun, as authorities aim to pinpoint the exact cause of death, whether by drowning or hypothermia.

Despite the hazards, the Calais region continues to attract migrants hoping to cross into England. In 2023, twelve migrants died attempting the journey.

As the UK confronts the ongoing issue of illegal crossings, with almost 30,000 attempted crossings in 2023, the government has controversial plans to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda.

While British Labor opposition leader Keir Starmer criticized the Rwanda plan, both he and British Foreign Minister David Cameron emphasized the need to dismantle human trafficking networks.
