The increase in dog owners seeking sedatives for their pets from veterinarians due to stress caused by fireworks around Bonfire Night. Dr. Alex Davies reports that about one-third of his prescriptions are related to helping pets cope during this time.

The RSPCA in Wales encourages consideration for animals during firework events and has seen 14 councils adopt policies to protect animal welfare. Alternative calming methods such as pheromone diffusers are mentioned, and pet care facilities like Bridgend Doggy Day Care offer quieter environments for dogs.

Dr. Davies advocates for stricter fireworks regulations to enhance animal welfare. Although the Welsh government lacks specific powers to control fireworks, the UK government says it will not ban sales but will monitor the situation and promote awareness.

The British Fireworks Association calls for better enforcement of existing laws rather than new legislation. The councils in Wales are taking various steps to minimize the impact on animals, including promoting quieter fireworks and public awareness campaigns.
