Fight! ‘UK coming to throw water on a drowning man'- Caller urges Gov’t

An irate caller on the Tuesday, February 16, 2021, edition of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) 'Let's Talk' radio show has urged the Government of the Virgin Islands to fight the United Kingdom's alleged attempts to trample on the freedoms of the territory.

In the show broadcasted on ZBVI 780 AM and live-streamed on Facebook, the caller urged the Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) administration to not ‘lay down’ regarding its relationship with the UK and allow the crown to take freedoms away from the people of the territory.

“We have this Commission of Inquiry coming from the motherland England… they ain't bringing much to the table to help we the people, but it seems like they coming to throw water on a drowning man,” he said.

“Fight, because freedom isn’t given to somebody, you don’t give freedom, you got to fight for your freedom,” he went on to say.

The Commission of Inquiry was announced on January 18, 2021, by controversial former Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert to look into whether corruption, abuse of office or other serious dishonesty may have taken place amongst public, elected and statutory officials in recent years in the [British] Virgin Islands

The method which Mr Jaspert used, which included keeping the local government in the dark about his intentions while colluding with the UK press, has raised questions about the real motive for the CoI.

It is also a known fact that Mr Jaspert shared a strained relationship with the new Government led by Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), who has pushed for Virgin Islanders to take up top posts in the territory while championing the call for more autonomy for the territory. This has included limiting the powers of the Governor.

Bad time for a CoI - Caller

The caller related that the VI is going through difficulties in the midst of the pandemic; however, the UK has seen it as an opportunity to step in with more challenges.

“When a boxer is down on the ground knocked out, you don’t come and try to punch him like they doing. You hold [him] up,” he said.

The caller further urged the administration to put God first and the people next and to continue ensuring that Virgin Islanders are pleased with the performance of the government.

The caller continued, “We've been going through a rough time and this ain't the time for what they bringing to the table. So please don't give up, fight, freedom is for who fight.”

On the same radio show, several persons called in to express their satisfaction with the Government and to pledge their support.
