Felixstowe Same-Sex Couple Receives Blessing from One of the Anglican Churches in a Historic Ceremony

A same-sex couple in Felixstowe, Suffolk, is among the first to receive a Church of England blessing. Catherine Bond and Jane Pearce, both associate priests at St John the Baptist Church, celebrated their union and their dedication to each other.

The House of Bishops recently approved blessings for same-sex couples. During the ceremony, Canon Andrew Dotchin highlighted the couple's journey, blessed by God.

In February, the General Synod voted to allow blessings for same-sex civil partnerships and marriages. The decision, upheld in a near eight-hour debate, was confirmed by the Bishops online, becoming effective this weekend.

The motion passed with 24 votes for, 11 against, and three abstentions. Clergy may voluntarily offer such blessings, as no formal legislative changes were made in the Church.
