Fed Chair Powell Predicts Further Interest Rate Increases, Says Regulations Will Not Impact Industry

Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that further interest rate increases are "a pretty good guess" of where the central bank is heading if the economy continues in its current direction.

He also stated that the Fed's decision to hold interest rates steady last week was not a "pause," and noted that a majority of policymakers see two more quarter-point rate increases as likely by the end of the year.

Powell also commented on banking regulations, saying that any changes to capital rules or other regulations would need to be justified and would not impact the industry in the near term.

Finally, he emphasized the central bank's focus on lowering inflation, which has moderated somewhat since the middle of last year.

The Federal Reserve (Fed) held its benchmark interest rate steady at 5%-5.25% at its last meeting, but projected that rates will have to increase by another half percentage point by the end of the year due to slow inflation and inflation being more than double the Fed's 2% target.

The Fed's views on interest rates may start to diverge, which could impact the economy during the upcoming presidential election.

If the Fed's policy is successful, the economy could see continued growth, lower inflation, and modestly higher unemployment.

However, if the Fed's policy fails, the economy could see increasing joblessness, high prices, and punishing interest rates for those trying to buy a home or car or finance a business.

The success or failure of Fed policy could have a significant impact on the election-year economy and the reelection chances of President Biden.
