Aalia Mahomed's community gathers to remember her kindness, passion for science, and vibrant spirit following her untimely death.
A vigil to honor 20-year-old Aalia Mahomed was held on March 26 at St Mary le Strand Church, drawing hundreds of mourners.

The gathering featured tributes reflecting her generosity, compassion, and zest for life, encapsulated in the slogan, 'Be More Aalia.'

Aalia, a second-year student at King’s College London majoring in Physics and Philosophy, was killed on March 18 when a van was driven through a set of gates, striking her while she was socializing with friends outside the university campus.

Described by family and peers as a vibrant individual, Aalia was often referred to as a 'social butterfly,' characterized by her positivity and openness.

Her mother, Samira Shafi, articulated the profound loss she felt, stating that Aalia was not only a daughter but also a best friend and companion.

Aalia was known for her academic ambitions in science, expressing a keen interest in physics, philosophy, and astronomy.

She actively participated in her university's space society and had aspirations to advance her career in engineering and aerospace.

At the time of her death, she was pursuing a summer work placement related to her field of study.

Her mother recalled Aalia's joy for city life and the arts, indicating her enthusiasm for cultural experiences, evident from her work experience in central London and her passion for music and theatre.

Aalia was also an avid traveler, having visited multiple countries including Japan, the United States, and several destinations across Southeast Asia, delighting in diverse cultures and experiences.

In her local community, Aalia was recognized for her bright smile and friendliness while working part-time at a local Morrisons supermarket, where colleagues have created a memorial and are collecting donations in her memory.

Her brother, Zain, aged 17, expressed the close bond they shared, noting that she not only acted as his sister but also served as a mentor.

Following their family tragedy, Zain has considered applying to King's College London in her memory.

Reflecting on Aalia’s unique traits, Zain described her insatiable curiosity about the world around her, illustrating her penchant for embracing new challenges despite personal preferences, such as her willingness to engage in sports.

During the vigil, Aalia's legacy was celebrated through heartfelt stories and shared moments, as mourners aspired to embody the spirit of her life and the values she represented.
