The technology scanned the faces of thousands of fans to catch criminals and those with football banning orders. Three people were arrested and charged after being identified by surveillance vans.
The individuals' faces were matched against a "watchlist" database containing images of tens of thousands of offenders and alleged criminals. Policing Minister Chris Philp defended the technology, stating that it helps officers "quickly and accurately identify" those wanted for serious crimes.
Privacy campaigners have criticized the use of facial recognition technology as Orwellian. The Met has previously used this technology during the Coronation and targeted operations in the West End.
It was also trialed at a Championship match in 2020. The Home Office has plans to build a mass facial recognition database from passport photos.
