As Ukraine's conflict with Russia continues, the EU aims to show solidarity, and Hungary's opposition could trigger the use of Article 7, the bloc's most severe disciplinary action.

Orbán has previously used vetoes to negotiate for benefits but now faces increased isolation within the EU due to his government's anti-democratic actions and alignment with Russia. Some EU officials fear that punitive measures could backfire, distancing Hungary further from the Union.

Ahead of a pivotal summit, there are efforts to engage Orbán diplomatically. For instance, French President Emmanuel Macron has sought to rebuild trust with Hungary, avoiding public criticism and personally inviting Orbán to Paris.

Meanwhile, far-right ideologies, like those Orbán promotes, are slowly becoming more mainstream within the EU. This shift is partly reflected in new, stricter migration policies.

With upcoming European Parliament elections, far-right figures are expected to gain more influence, suggesting a possible future realignment of the EU's ideological center.

EU leaders are cautiously navigating potential responses to Hungary's non-compliance, weighing the consequences of invoking Article 7 against the need to maintain unity and support for Ukraine.
