Hereu expects 23.2 million visitors in the first quarter alone, up 11% from the previous year, with spending set to increase by over 18%.
Specific forecasts for the full year weren't given, but Hereu is optimistic about setting new records though he noted Spain's need to attract more visitors from other continents and the importance of balancing tourist accommodation with local life.
Regulations are being eyed to manage the supply of holiday homes and ensure sustainable tourism practices.
Exceltur, an industry group, projects Spanish tourism revenues to exceed €200 billion this year, an 8.6% increase from 2023, despite geopolitical tensions and inflation concerns.
The tourism sector's GDP contribution is expected to grow, and Spain is likely to draw more visitors than competitors in the eastern Mediterranean, such as Egypt, partly due to its distance from conflict zones like Gaza.
