Ex-Harrods Director Alleges Mohamed Al Fayed Manipulated Managers with Cash Gifts

Former Harrods executive Jon Brilliant reveals coercive tactics by late entrepreneur

Mohamed Al Fayed, the late owner of Harrods, allegedly used cash gifts to manipulate and control managers, according to former director Jon Brilliant.

Brilliant, who joined Harrods in 2000 to relaunch its online business, claims he received around $50,000 (£39,000) in cash from Al Fayed over 18 months to compromise him.

When Brilliant refused to comply, he was dismissed.

Harrods, now under different management, has not responded to these specific allegations but previously expressed dismay over various abuses associated with Al Fayed.

Brilliant describes a culture of mistrust and surveillance within the company, hindering managers' ability to exercise independent judgment.

He recalls being offered cash before business trips, purportedly to gather compromising information that could be used against him.

The atmosphere was reportedly so secretive that multiple directors kept personal phones to avoid official lines being bugged.

Brilliant emphasizes the importance of speaking out to support alleged victims of abuse during Al Fayed's tenure.

Harrods' managerial environment, according to him and anonymously corroborated by others, was fraught with instability, regular firings, and enforced loyalty.
