The charges relate to images found on a child’s phone, allegedly shared on a WhatsApp chat between December 2020 and April 2022.
London police arrested Edwards on 8 November 2023, and he was officially charged on 26 June 2023, following authorisation from the Crown Prosecution Service.
He is scheduled to appear in London’s Westminster Magistrates' Court.
Edwards resigned due to medical advice after allegations surfaced that he had paid a young person thousands of pounds for sexually explicit photos.
Edwards had been one of the main faces at the BBC, covering major events such as the death of Queen Elizabeth, elections, royal weddings, and the 2012 Olympics.
