EU Adopts Groundbreaking AI Legislation

The European Union has enacted a pioneering Artificial Intelligence Act, ratified by the EU Parliament, which aims to safeguard both human rights and safety while promoting innovation in AI.

With a significant majority of 523 votes for, and minimal opposition, the landmark regulation categorizes AI risks and introduces stringent measures against high-risk AI practices that infringe on citizens' rights, like certain types of biometric identification and emotion recognition.

Thierry Breton, a key EU official, celebrated Europe's new role as a global AI regulatory leader. The Act strictly limits law enforcement's use of real-time biometric surveillance, permitting it only under narrowly prescribed conditions to protect public security.

Brando Benifei, a parliamentary co-rapporteur, hailed the Act as the world's first enforceable AI law designed to curb risks, enhance transparency, and fight discrimination. The new rules are set to become enforceable after the current legislative session ends in May, pending final approvals.

This legislative move places the EU at the forefront of addressing global concerns on AI misuses, such as deepfakes, and joins other international efforts to responsibly regulate AI technologies.
