France mulls penalties to rein in ultra-fast fashion brands

France is considering imposing hefty fines on brands like Shein for their rapid production rate, to mitigate their environmental toll.

French MPs have suggested penalties could reach up to 50% of the retail price of an item. They criticize these brands for introducing thousands of new items daily, which fuels consumerism and environmental damage.

The proposed legislation targets Shein, which releases over 7,200 new designs daily, offering nearly half a million products. The suggested fines could be up to €10 per item by 2030.

Shein claims to adhere to top sustainable and social practices, according to their statement to AFP. The bill will go to parliament for discussion.

France's Environment Minister Christophe Bechu announced planned measures to decrease the fashion industry's environmental footprint, potentially including a fast fashion advertising ban and price adjustments to favor more sustainable options.

Online fast fashion's rise, with Shein at the forefront, has challenged traditional retail dynamics. Unlike Zara and H&M, Shein's model leverages small orders and rapid scalability, disrupting standard manufacturing practices.
