Spain has imposed a three-month ban on Sam Altman’s Worldcoin, as the data protection authority, AEPD, cited serious privacy issues related to its iris-scanning practice for cryptocurrency rewards.

They've ordered an immediate halt in data collection and the use of existing data. Worldcoin counters that the AEPD claims are inaccurate and breach EU law.

The AEPD took action following complaints about unclear information, data collected from minors, and problems with consent withdrawal. Worldcoin, which claims over 4 million users in 120 countries, faces global scrutiny for its data handling.

The company insists its technology is legitimate and vital, despite the Spanish authority deeming it a high-risk activity under the EU's GDPR.

The Bavarian state data agency, Worldcoin’s principal EU investigator, is actively examining the case, with results to be shared among European colleagues soon.

Additionally, Portugal and the UK are assessing Worldcoin's data compliance, emphasizing lawful data processing and clear, retractable consent policies.

Altman touts Worldcoin’s ID system as crucial for human verification online, especially against the backdrop of AI advancements. The project boasts significant backing from high-profile venture capital firms.
