Eurozone consumer confidence dips amid rising inflation

Eurozone consumer confidence has deteriorated, as indicated by a declining consumer sentiment index in January 2024, resulting from surging inflation rates.

27 January 2024 · 16:43 UTC

The index, reflecting consumer optimism in the economy, dropped to -16.1, a slight decrease from December's -15.2 level.

This index operates on a scale of -100 to 100, with -100 representing very low confidence, 0 neutrality, and 100 high confidence.

It integrates the sentiment of around 23,000 households surveyed on their economic and financial perspectives and future expectations, including consumer prices.

The broader European Union experienced a similar downtrend in confidence, with its index reaching -16.2, a marginal drop from the previous month.

Distinguishing between the EU's member state composition and the eurozone's currency union, this news is concurrent with an annual inflation rate jump to 2.9% in December 2023 for countries using the euro, observed by Eurostat.
