The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has reported a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) throughout Europe.

Gonorrhea cases increased by 48%, with 70,881 instances recorded in the EU and EEA in 2022, up from the previous year. A similar upward trend was seen with syphilis, with a 34% hike to 35,391 cases, while chlamydia infections climbed by 16%, totaling 216,508.

ECDC director Andrea Ammon described the increase as both shocking and concerning, suggesting that the reported figures might still underestimate the actual numbers, due to varying testing practices and access to sexual healthcare across different regions.

The agency also highlighted the potential severe health risks posed by STIs like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis if not treated properly, despite these being curable infections.

Ammon emphasized the need for improved prevention strategies and health education, pointing out that effective testing, treatment, and preventive measures are critical in combating the rise in STI rates.

Moreover, the ECDC alerted to the marked increases in lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) and congenital syphilis, the latter being transmitted from mother to fetus during pregnancy.
