The law aims to foster innovation in AI while addressing the risks it poses to individuals' rights and health.

The law will classify AI systems according to the level of risk they pose and impose obligations on them accordingly.

The EU has proposed a high-risk list, including AI in critical infrastructure, education, human resources, public order, and migration management.

The law will also regulate generative AI systems, such as those capable of producing text, images, code, audio, and other media, and ban AI systems that use biometric surveillance, emotion recognition, and predictive policing.

The lawmakers are considering accelerating the implementation of the law or bringing in rules earlier for generative AI.

The EU has passed a draft law regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, with lawmakers hailing it as "historic" and pushing back against critics who say the EU's plans could harm rather than encourage innovation.

The EU's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton, welcomed the vote and emphasized the need to act quickly and responsibly in addressing the societal, ethical, and economic questions raised by AI.
