England's flood defence plans reduced 'due to inflation'

England's flood defense plans have been significantly scaled back, with the government originally committing to protect 336,000 more properties from flooding between 2021 and 2027.

However, a report by the National Audit Office (NAO) reveals that this target has been reduced to 200,000 properties, a 40% reduction primarily due to inflation.

Despite recent severe storms and widespread flooding, the Environment Agency removed 500 of the 2,000 new flood defense projects initially included in the government's six-year flood and coastal erosion program, despite increased funding.

Additionally, 203,000 properties with existing flood protection face an elevated risk due to a £34 million funding shortfall for maintenance.

The NAO recommends collaboration between government departments to maximize value for money in flood defense projects. Notably, the government has not set a clear flood resilience target beyond 2026, and nature-based solutions are highlighted as crucial for mitigating floods and climate change impacts.

Defra acknowledges the need to reassess targets due to inflation and pandemic-related delays while emphasizing its commitment to investing in flood protection.
