Engineering firm IMI has disclosed that it has been targeted by a cyber attack, marking a significant event in the ongoing trend of cybersecurity incidents affecting UK companies.

This announcement comes one week after rival Smiths Group reported that hackers had gained access to its global systems.

IMI, headquartered in Birmingham, has not revealed specific information regarding which data may have been accessed nor detailed the extent of the incident.

However, it has confirmed that certain systems across various global locations have been affected.

In response to the breach, IMI has initiated an isolation protocol for impacted systems and is collaborating with external cybersecurity specialists to investigate and mitigate the incident.

In a statement concerning the breach, IMI emphasized that once unauthorized access was detected, the firm promptly engaged cybersecurity experts to address the situation.

The company also indicated that it is taking steps to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

Internal communications have been sent to employees and customers to inform them about the situation, though reports suggest that the cyber attack was not aimed specifically at compromising employee or customer data.

Following the news of the attack, IMI’s shares fell by 3% during morning trading on Thursday, reflecting market concerns related to cybersecurity risks.

The incident involving IMI is part of a broader pattern of recent cybersecurity challenges facing UK businesses.

Last week, Smiths Group alerted the stock market to its own cyber attack, although no links between the two incidents have been established.

Additionally, Transport for London recently experienced a significant IT breach, warning approximately 5,000 customers that their personal details might have been accessed.

High-end retailer Harvey Nichols also reported potential exposure of customer data after suffering a cyber attack last autumn.

In November, Portsmouth City Council became one of several local authorities affected by a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, which disrupts services by overwhelming them with excessive internet traffic from multiple sources.

IMI operates in 50 countries and has a substantial presence in the United States, Europe, and Asia.

The company specializes in fluid and motion control, providing engineering components for sectors such as process automation, climate control, transport, and life sciences.
