The UK energy regulator, Ofgem, has launched a review of daily standing charges on energy bills, inviting input from billpayers, charities, and businesses.

Currently, energy customers pay a fixed daily charge that covers the costs of connecting to an energy supply, but there has been growing anger over rising fees and the inability of customers to reduce what they pay.

These charges have doubled in most areas over the last two years, adding an extra £300 to the annual energy bill for a typical household.

Ofgem is seeking opinions on how to change the system, including the possibility of scrapping the charge completely, and any alternative system would need to provide extra protections for customers with high energy use for medical reasons.
