Eluned Morgan: First Female Welsh First Minister

Eluned Morgan has been elected as the new Welsh Labour leader, making her the first female Welsh first minister. She aims to unify the party after a period of turmoil. Morgan has been the Welsh health secretary and MS for Mid and West Wales since 2016, and she received support from 26 out of 30 Labour Senedd members.
Eluned Morgan has been elected unopposed as the new Welsh Labour leader, and she is set to become Wales' next first minister, marking the first time a woman has held this position.

The election was triggered by the resignation of Vaughan Gething after a tumultuous period in Welsh politics.

Morgan, who is the Welsh health secretary and MS for Mid and West Wales since 2016, intends to unify Welsh Labour, which has faced significant internal splits.

She received support from 26 out of 30 Labour Senedd members.

UK Labour leader Keir Starmer welcomed her election, while opponents voiced concerns about her past performance and the state of the Welsh NHS.

A formal vote by all 60 MSs is required to officially confirm her role as first minister.
