Electronic Prescriptions Launched in Wales for the First Time

Wales has launched an electronic prescription service for the first time, making it easier, safer, and more efficient for healthcare providers to prescribe and for patients to receive medicines.

The system allows GPs to securely send prescriptions to a patient's chosen pharmacy online, eliminating the need for paper forms. The service, which began in Rhyl, Denbighshire, is expected to have a phased rollout across the rest of Wales starting from January 2024.

With the electronic prescription system, patients can track their prescriptions from the surgery to the pharmacy, and repeat prescription forms will be sent directly to their chosen pharmacy, reducing the need for visits to the surgery. The initiative is expected to save up to 40 million paper forms from being printed each year.

Health and Social Services Minister Eluned Morgan described electronic prescriptions as a "major milestone" in the digitization of healthcare in Wales. While electronic prescriptions have been available in England, the Welsh scheme aims to be part of a more comprehensive digital healthcare system.

This introduction of electronic prescriptions is expected to enhance the efficiency and convenience of prescription management in Wales and align with broader digital healthcare transformation efforts.
