Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson will address school leaders in Birmingham, urging a shift from a narrow focus on academic excellence to student wellbeing.

She highlights that while exam results are essential, they should not overshadow the need for a healthy and fulfilled life.

Phillipson emphasizes the importance of belonging for improving attendance and outcomes for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

This address marks her first major policy statement as education secretary, aligning with an ongoing curriculum and assessment review led by Prof Becky Francis.

Additionally, a children's wellbeing bill is being planned for next year.

Phillipson's broader educational vision includes incorporating music, art, sport, and drama alongside core subjects.

She also announced a tuition fee increase for undergraduates in England in 2025-26 while aiming to improve university access for disadvantaged students.

The association's representative Anne Murdoch noted that rising tuition fees could hinder university access for disadvantaged groups.
