Edinburgh train services resume with 'small changes' after power cut

Train services to and from Edinburgh Waverley due to a power cut. ScotRail, the rail operator, has announced that services are gradually returning to normal after Network Rail engineers worked through the night to fix the power issues.

While a full service is expected to run on Friday, there will be some small changes, and some services will have fewer carriages than usual. Weather-related speed restrictions are also in place for the day.

The disruption caused passengers to make alternative transport arrangements on Thursday, with tickets being accepted on Edinburgh trams and some local bus services. Network Rail believes the power outage was caused by a "telecomms fault" and has dispatched a specialist engineer to investigate. They have apologized for the disruption.

David Simpson, operations director at ScotRail, explained that the loss of signalling controls at the station just before rush hour affected train operations over a wide area, similar to traffic lights on the railways. He apologized to those affected by the disruption and urged passengers to keep their receipts and contact ScotRail's customer relations team if they had to make alternative arrangements.

Additionally, the disruption caused by the power cut is compounded by delays in parts of Scotland due to Storm Ciarán, and a yellow warning for rain is in place for the UK's east coast until 18:00 on Friday.
