Eddie Dempsey has been appointed as the new general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), succeeding Mick Lynch, who has announced his retirement from the position.

Dempsey, who served as Lynch's deputy during key railway strikes under the previous Conservative government, is recognized for his close association with Lynch, who has been a prominent figure in British trade unionism.

Dempsey's tenure in the RMT spans 20 years, during which he has worked his way up from a platform worker at Paddington station to various significant roles within the union.

He has held positions in local branches, the national executive, and has been a full-time official representing the interests of railway workers.

Notably, Dempsey's early career began in Deptford market, experiences that contributed to his negotiation skills in union matters.

Influenced by previous RMT leadership, particularly Bob Crow, Dempsey was inspired by Crow's unapologetic approach to union disputes and his strong, relatable working-class presence.

Crow, who also hailed from the same southeast London area, set a standard for union representation that Dempsey aims to uphold.

He recalled the profound impact Crow's televised interviews had on him, describing the emotional resonance of seeing a figure who mirrored his own background effectively championing worker rights.

As Dempsey steps into this leadership role, he faces the challenge of managing ongoing industrial disputes in the rail sector.

His experience navigating complex negotiations during strikes positions him to lead the union at a time of significant labor tensions.

Dempsey has acknowledged the mentorship provided by Lynch, stating that Lynch's oratory skills, intelligence, and humility have greatly influenced his approach.

Outside of his professional commitments, Dempsey finds solace in family time and leisure activities.

He supports Millwall Football Club and enjoys playing bingo at his local social club with his wife, reflecting his down-to-earth approach to life outside of union politics.
