According to the latest report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Pakistan's Karachi has been ranked among the world's least livable cities in 2023.
The Global Livability Index 2023 placed Karachi at the 169th position out of 173 cities, with only Lagos, Algiers, Tripoli, and Damascus ranked lower.
The EIU's index evaluates the living conditions of cities around the world based on five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Each category is scored on a scale of 1-100, with 1 being intolerable and 100 being ideal.
Karachi's overall score was 42.5, which is well below the ideal score of 100.
The city performed poorly in the stability category, with a score of 20, which is similar to the score in 2022.
In the other categories, Karachi scored 50 in healthcare, 38.7 in culture and environment, 75 in education, and 51.8 in infrastructure.
The history of Karachi on the EIU's index is not promising either.
In 2019, the city was ranked 136 out of 140 cities, and no report was published in 2020.
In 2022, Karachi was ranked 134th out of 140 cities.
The report highlights that most of the top-ranked cities on the index are from Western Europe and Canada.
Vienna, the capital of Austria, topped the list for the second consecutive year, with a perfect score of 100 in four out of the five categories.
Overall, the report suggests that Karachi faces significant challenges in terms of livability, with stability being a major concern.
The city's poor ranking underscores the need for immediate action to address these challenges and improve the quality of life for its residents.
